SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Fireballs GC Captain Sergio Garcia opened with a 5-under 66 to grab a share of the first-round lead Friday at LIV Golf Chicago.

Garcia is part of a five-way tie on the individual leaderboard as the Spanish star seeks his first win since joining LIV Golf. He almost won earlier this year in Singapore, losing in a playoff to Talor Gooch.

Starting his round at Rich Harvest Farms on the third hole, Garcia birdied the par-4 fifth, par-5 sixth and par-4 ninth, then made eagle at the par-5 10th. From there, he played even-par the remainder of his round with one birdie and one bogey. He had a makeable birdie attempt on his last hole but did not convert the putt.

“Great day, obviously,” Garcia said. “Started really well. My first probably 10 or 12 holes I was right on, and then a couple of shots here and there, a couple of tougher holes that I had to play, managed to scramble quite nicely. Shame I didn't birdie the last, but other than that, I'm happy with the day I had.”

Along with Garcia’s 66, the Fireballs received contributing scores from Carlos Ortiz with a 4-under 67 and Eugenio Chacarra with a 3-under 68. Abraham Ancer matched Chacarra’s 68 but the score was not needed.

As a result, the Fireballs posted a counting score of 12 under, putting them in a tie for second with Crushers GC, one shot behind Stinger GC. The Fireballs are seeking their second team victory of the season.
